New Year's Eve is celebrated around the world to mark the beginning of a new year. In Canada, people gather together on the night of December 31st and have parties where balloons and garlands often serve as decorations. Ten seconds before midnight, people countdown and wish each other a Happy New Year once midnight strikes. Many countries and cities organize fireworks and outdoor celebrations.

On January 1, many people take New Year's resolutions: they write down things they would like to change about themselves or work on for the next year. For example, many people take the resolution of learning a new language!
