Introduction

Do you remember when you first learned to read? You started with little words here and little sounds there. Everyone has to start somewhere! With this activity, we suggest you introduce your child to reading by identifying the sounds (phonemes) in words. The table below includes letter and letter combination sounds for beginner readers.

There are several ways to do this exercise with your child. Here are some examples:

  • Find a sound in one of the words written on the cards
  • Point to cards that have a particular sound
  • Point to cards that have similar sounds
  • Name other words with similar sounds
  • Arrange the cards alphabetically
  • Etc.
