Halloween is the perfect time to dive into spine-tingling stories of all kinds! Here are four ways to incorporate stories into your routine.
- When night falls, dim the lights, snuggle up with a blanket, and put on a podcast or audiobook of mystery stories. This screen-free active listening gently stimulates your child’s imagination before bedtime
- Our game, Book of Spells, is perfectly on theme for Halloween! This immersive game asks players to read excerpts from books by children’s authors from Quebec and then answer comprehension questions to feed and care for a little monster. We recommend these two stories for Halloween: Friday the 13th and Thunderstorm.
- Scour the library or your bookshelf together to find a few not-too-spooky stories that are age appropriate for your child.
- And for kids who’d rather write than read, why not invite them to make up a story that’s scary, funny, or just plain surprising?
There’s nothing like rolling up your sleeves to give your home a festive feel! Here are a few ideas to keep young interior decorators busy:
- Carve a pumpkin, using simple shapes to draw the eyes, mouth, and nose before carving.
- Turn your space into a haunted house with spooky DIY decorations and scary props.
- Make origami bats or ghosts to hang all over the house.
- Make mocktails with ghoulish colours and fantastic flavours!
To give your little monster’s brain a workout, you can challenge them to figure out which food colouring colours to add to the drink to make it orange (red and yellow), measure out ingredients, double recipes, come up with names that rhyme or feature alliteration (e.g., Mocktail of Misfortune, Spider Cider), etc. And why not add some gross eye-shaped candies or gummy worms? - Bake mummy-shaped cookies! Bake up a batch of gingerbread men following your favourite recipe, then turn them into mummies using white icing for the bandages and green candy for some spooky eyes.
