When parents ask their child “So, how was your day?” after school, they tend to get a one-word answer: “Good.” Getting more details can be like pulling teeth!

If you wish you could have deeper conversations with your child about how things went at school, we recommend using this poster as a starting point. You can try combining it with Alloprof’s Emotion Wheel to encourage your child to articulate their feelings.

All you have to do is print out the poster, laminate it (or place it in a clear sheet protector), and choose where you want to put it up (e.g., the living room, your child’s bedroom, the dining room).

This way, your child can write on it in erasable marker, then wipe off their answers the next day and start from scratch!

Here are a few tips on asking your child about their day:

  • Lead by example by sharing the highlights of your day and the emotions you felt.
  • Ask open-ended but specific questions, such as “Who did you play with today?” or “What activity did you do in PE class?
  • Wait for the right moment—give your child time to decompress when they get home from school.
  • Be fully present during your conversation.
