There are many helpful strategies that kids can use to calm down. Here are a few examples:
- Focus on the present moment: Turn an hourglass over and watch the sand run out, or take deep breaths.
- Move your body: Do a yoga pose, rock from side to side, or push against a wall as hard as you can.
- Keep your hands busy: Squeeze a stress ball, fold and unfold a piece of paper, or draw circles on a piece of paper without lifting your pencil.
- Stimulate your senses: Listen to soft music, drink a glass of cold water, or touch five objects near you.
We suggest hanging this poster in a quiet corner of your home. Then, when your child is upset, they can go to this space and use one of the strategies on the poster to help them calm down. Not only will this help them relax and recentre in the moment, but over time, it will help them develop their autonomy as they learn to self-regulate.
