The Learning Together project is a joint effort between the Institut des troubles d’apprentissage (Institut TA) and Alloprof Parents. Here, you’ll find a wide range of resources to help and support your child in learning to read and write. The project proposes sequences, each consisting of a series of learning activities designed by Institut TA speech therapists and resource teachers. The activities feature easy-to-follow scenarios. You can download them or print them out so that they’re always close at hand! These resources are especially useful for parents of children with learning difficulties or disorders.
* More sequences coming soon. Stay tuned!
We recommend doing three 15-minute activities a week at home. This way, your child will progress without overwhelming their daily life and homework routine.
Phonological awareness (identifying and understanding the sounds in words) is an essential skill for language development in preschool and elementary-aged children. The activities in this sequence are designed to help you work with your child on learning the sounds and sound sequences within words. By playing around with rhymes, segmenting words into sounds and syllables, and using everyday objects to represent them, you can help your child develop phonological awareness.
Reading fluency enables children to read with ease and accuracy and to better understand and interpret a text. As your child’s reading fluency improves, their working memory isn’t called on as often because word decoding becomes more spontaneous. Fluency also goes a long way towards developing a love of reading! Explore this activity sequence designed to help your child become a fluent reader.
A broad vocabulary is foundational when it comes to understanding a text and knowing how to correctly use words in a sentence. Learning a new word is a bit like mental gymnastics—it involves much more than straightforward memorization. You need to know its definition, some of its synonyms, recognize its class and gender, and so on. But don’t worry! The strategies in this learning sequence will provide you with the tools you need to help your child develop their vocabulary.
Reading is a multidimensional skill and a key building block for academic success. It requires the use of multiple strategies to be done effectively. In these sequences (one for Cycle 2 and one for Cycle 3), we offer activities designed to help your child develop effective reading strategies. Throughout these sequences, we have provided either an informative text or a story to facilitate understanding of the strategy to be modelled. You will find them in the appendix. You can also use your child’s school texts for these activities, or when applying the related strategies to your reading routine.
These activity sequences are designed to improve spelling and sentence formulation skills in elementary school students. They present various strategies, including word deconstruction, identifying the bases of words (small units of meaning), using visual cues, and comparing words. This set of activities is designed to strengthen your child’s understanding of grammar and improve their ability to read and write coherent sentences.
