Globalization facilitates the movement of goods, services and labour. This movement is beneficial, allowing immigrant workers to fill jobs in other countries.

However, workers can have trouble finding jobs. They might not speak the language well enough. Some countries offer language classes and help immigrants integrate.

Immigration and the Workforce

Workers from other countries may encounter other problems when looking for work. Their degrees are often not recognized or the host country finds their training insufficient, making it harder to find a job.

Governments are aware of issues related to recognizing prior learning and started implementing measures to help immigrants find work in host countries (labour mobility) and integrate into their new society.

Employment Policies

Since recognition of prior learning is often a barrier to immigration, some people choose to reside illegally in a country. They are then in an irregular situation.

Some companies hire undocumented workers because they can pay them less. As a result, undocumented workers often work in poor conditions for low wages. Since these jobs are part of the shadow economy, their work is not reported to the government. Therefore, it makes it difficult for the government to get involved.

The shadow economy has negative impacts on society, legal workers and undocumented workers.
