History is the science that studies the past and the evolution of human societies.
The word citizen refers to much more than an individual living in a given region. Citizens live under the protection and authority of the State. This protection comes with rights and obligations. Citizens benefit from civic rights that protect them. In exchange, they are expected to fulfill certain societal obligations: citizens must pay taxes, obey the law, appear for jury duty when summoned, etc. In short, citizens play an active role in democratic life, contributing to legislation, political action, and the organization of governments. To fully assume your citizen role, you need to understand certain key concepts. That is why History is a part of Citizenship Education.
Human history traces the emergence and evolution of human societies through the facts, events, and writings that have changed the state of things (the way people lived, the way they thought, etc.). This knowledge helps us better understand the issues facing the world today. Ultimately, modern society is the heir to the societies of the past. Knowing historical facts helps you to play your role as a citizen, understand its importance, know your rights and obligations, exercise critical judgment, and take concrete action. Citizens can participate in public debate and by doing so, help shape the way we define the common good.
