Title
Slave from the Nipissing or Fox tribe
          Corps
Slaves first appeared in the colony in 1629. However, it was only in the 18th century that their numbers increased dramatically. Unlike the slaves in the 13 British colonies who worked in the fields, slaves in New France mostly did domestic work. Most of the slaves in the 13 colonies came from Africa, whereas in New France they were generally Indigenous people. But not all Indigenous people became slaves; some were allies of the French and even captured members of enemy tribes to sell to the habitants of New France. There were many Black slaves in New France, particularly in Louisiana.
