The word "mathematics" comes from the Greek word máthēma which means "science, knowledge". This word led to the adjective mathēmatikós which means "relating to knowledge". The Greek philosopher Plato believed that no one could consider themselves educated without using their mental capacities. Mathematics has contributed, over time, to a better understanding of phenomena and the world around us. “Math” is used in its singular form to broadly refer to the different fields within mathematics.
