The manufacturing processes include all operations that allow the construction of a technical object.
Once the construction requirements have been determined in the specifications, the dimensions and shapes of the parts have been drawn in the drawings, the materials to use have been selected, and the procedures to follow have been developed in the manufacturing process sheet, it is time to proceed with the construction of the object. This is done by means of several operations which can be grouped into three stages:
These different operations require the use of several instruments and equipment. We can classify the useful manufacturing instruments into two categories: tools and machine-tools. Any instrument that is used in the manufacturing process of an object is a tool. For example, a screwdriver is used to screw parts together or a scroll saw’s purpose is to cut out details in a wooden part. Most tools can be manipulated simply by the strength of the user. However, some tools sometimes involve forces other than human strength and those are machine-tools. For example, a band saw is powered by an electric motor and held in place with various fasteners. The set of tools and machine tools necessary for the manufacture of an object is called tooling.
