The first trick is to copy the tables onto a sheet of paper and then read them aloud. It is recommended to write them out and reread them several times. The use of several senses such as sight, since we see what we write; hearing, since we hear what we read aloud; and touch, since we write the multiplications, helps in memorizing the tables. You can also use different colours when rewriting them.

Here is a second trick for learning the tables. This trick is called "The Bowl Trick". Here are the steps to use it:

  1. Copy the times table one below the other on a sheet of paper

  2. Cut out each equation so that there is only one on each small piece of paper.

  3. Put all the strips of paper into a bowl or hat.

  4. Get someone to pick a strip of paper and to read the equation aloud.

  5. If the correct answer is given, do not put the strip of paper back into the bowl.

  6. If an incorrect answer is given, the strip of paper is placed back into the bowl.

  7. An empty bowl means that the times tables have been reviewed correctly!

It is also possible to mix addition, subtraction, multiplication and division equations into the bowl. This method is one of the best ways to review!

Tip 3 - The Battle of Cards

To begin, find a deck of cards and remove the two Jokers. Next, shuffle the cards and divide them equally between two players.

Then, like a battle, players turn a card over at the same time.

The goal is to multiply (or another operation) the two card numbers that have just been turned over. The first player to give a correct answer wins both cards. Whoever accumulates the most cards wins the game. Finally, a game where luck doesn’t decide the winner!

The values of the cards are from 1 to 10; the Jacks, Queens and Kings are each worth 10. To make the game more difficult, the value of the face cards can be changed so that they have a value of 11, 12 and 13 respectively.
