Before using lab equipment, it is important to know the main safety precautions to take.

Safety rules are designed to prevent accidents and injuries. Here are some valuable tips on how to protect yourself:

  • Always wear your safety goggles.

  • Follow the instructions provided by the teacher or lab technician.

  • Follow the procedure approved by the teacher.

  • Do not use equipment that is not listed in the procedure. If necessary, consult the person in charge of the lab.

  • Keep calm and pay attention to your work.

  • At the beginning of a lab session, make sure you know where to find the first aid kit and emergency materials (blanket, fire extinguisher, eyewash, first aid kit, etc.).

  • Work in a standing position and dress appropriately: wear a lab coat, tie back long hair, wear closed-toe shoes and wear gloves if necessary.

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before leaving the lab.

  • Inform the person in charge of the lab immediately if any equipment is broken or if there is an accident during an experiment. If there is broken glass, dispose of it in the designated container.

  • Never taste or drink products used in experiments. Do not eat food in the lab. It may come in contact with toxic substances.

  • Avoid directly inhaling chemical fumes. Keep containers of volatile products, which evaporate easily, closed.

  • Never use electrical devices or sharp equipment until you have learned how to use them safely.

When working with chemicals in the lab, always read the labels to learn about the health hazards (see the Hazard Symbol Table). When handled, these products can enter the body through:

  1. Inhalation: when breathing in vapours, gases, fumes or dust.

  2. Skin contact: if it comes into direct contact with hazardous products.

  3. Ingestion: if using a pipetting or siphoning technique.

  4. Injection: if your skin is cut or punctured.
