On June 22, 1960, Liberal Party leader Jean Lesage won the elections with his slogan: “C’est le temps que ça change” (It’s time for change). His program contained several reforms that significantly modernized the Quebec government. Numerous bills were proposed to protect the French language and implement provincial immigration controls.
The major political decisions made in the 1960s and 1970s indicate Quebec’s intense assertion of a new national identity that was no longer rooted in Catholicism. In addition, Quebecers fought for the recognition of their human rights and freedoms and questioned religious culture.
