In the second half of the 20th century, several events led to major changes in the world. The number of states increased significantly as more of them claimed sovereignty. Sovereignty refers to the absolute power held by a state to govern itself by making its own laws and enforcing them within its territory.

Globalization is a phenomenon that emerged in the mid-20th century that significantly changed the rules of the game. It became easier for countries to trade goods, services and capital with each other across national borders.

This led to certain global issues. Many countries joined international organizations to address these global issues together. However, by joining these organizations, states lost some of their sovereignty, which led to a redefinition of their powers.
