Numbers can be written in a variety of different ways: as fractions, in decimal notation, in scientific notation, etc. It is important to understand the properties of each of these forms as well as how to convert from one form to another.

Numbers were not always written with the currently used digits. Depending on the time and culture, different notations and modes of representation were used. In fact, the base 10 method which is universally followed today has not always been strictly used. Different numbering systems existed and still exist to this day, especially in computer science, to represent numbers alternatively.
