This Crash Course focuses on simplifying algebraic expressions. You can use the interactive video, recap and practice questions to review this topic.
This Crash Course reviews simplifying algebraic expressions. To do so, you must be able to perform the basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) on algebraic expressions. You also need to grasp the vocabulary associated with algebra, understand the order of operations and remember the meaning of the acronym BEDMAS.
To simplify an algebraic expression, carry out the various calculations following the order of operations.
Start by performing the algebraic calculations in brackets. Then, if there are any, calculate the exponents. Next, multiply and divide from left to right. It's possible that several of these can be done at the same time if they are separated by an addition or a subtraction. Finally, add and subtract like terms. The answer will be a new, shorter algebraic expression.
