To simplify an algebraic expression, carry out the various calculations following the order of operations.

Start by performing the algebraic calculations in brackets. Then, if there are any, calculate the exponents. Next, multiply and divide from left to right. It's possible that several of these can be done at the same time if they are separated by an addition or a subtraction. Finally, add and subtract like terms. The answer will be a new, shorter algebraic expression.
